A world-class example of city-enhancing placemaking, Edinburgh St James is one of the UK’s largest and most significant regeneration projects, of which Nuveen Real Estate are proud to be a part-owner and developer. With an estimated investment value of over £1 billion, the development will create a 1.7 million sq ft urban resort, comprising 850,000 sq ft of retail space, anchored by John Lewis, a multi-screen cinema, a 4 Star apart hotel for Roomzzz and a world class W Hotel, which represents their debut in Scotland, comprised of 244 rooms. In addition, 152 private apartments, offering breathtaking views over the city, set a gold standard for prime residential accommodation. Designed by Allan Murray Architects, the development will help move Edinburgh further up the UK retail rankings, from 13th to 8th, and will support the city’s tourist industry, which contributes an estimated £260 million to Edinburgh’s economy each year. Edinburgh St James will also create up to 3,000 permanent jobs.
Edinburgh St James is a prime example of city enhancing place making - a result of best in class design and delivery. By taking a strategic and integrated approach to the planning, design and management of the project, Edinburgh St James will create a unique, inspiring place to live and visit, set within and integrating with the historic context of the New Town and world heritage site.
The scheme has been designed to create an intuitive and accessible circuit around the city – anchored by places and experiences that will draw people from one place to the next – a key component of the map of the city.
Connection with great transport links within the retail circuit will aid shoppers’ mobile experience and accessibility. It is an environment that emphasises the experience of people and not just cars (the latter will be accommodated in lower levels).
The scheme will introduce three high quality intimate yet substantial public spaces all connected by routes and streets to encourage a strong sense of place.
