After several years in town planning as a consultant in 1979 Gerry joined Jones Lang Wootton, Chartered Surveyors, to help set up their Research Department.   In 1985 he was made partner having pioneered the development of econometric forecasting in commercial real estate.   He participated in the formation of JLW Fund Management which took on the investment management of institutional property portfolios and developed a suite of risk management techniques to manage them. 

On the merger of JLW with LaSalle Investment Management of Chicago he became Regional Director of European Strategy and a member of the European Investment Committee, a group charged with supervising acquisitions and disposals on behalf of a range of institutional clients, both separate accounts and co-mingled private equity vehicles.   In 2005 he led the development within LaSalle of a global risk management system.  In 2009 he retired from LaSalle. Since when he has accepted an invitation to become strategic advisor to Legal & General Property.  He now sits on two Committees of DTZ Investment Management acting on behalf of two discretionary mandates from UK Pension Funds.  He writes occasionally in the press and authored a research study into the causes of portfolio risk, which was published in 2011 by the Investment Property Forum.
